An ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde, directed by Thelma Russell “An Ideal Husband” was first produced in January 1895, a month before “The Importance of Being Earnest”. It’s a witty social melodrama, and encompasses ‘shameful pasts, secret affairs, astonishing revelations, political intrigue’, as Sir Robert Chiltern, politician, strives to survive a blackmail attempt which would reveal a discreditable incident in his past. His friend, dandy and idler Lord Goring, tries to foil the wicked Mrs Cheveley, whilst also attempting to sort out his own romantic future.
