Performances 22nd - 27th February 2010
Vincent in Brixton by Nicholas Wright, directed by Julia Armstrong. Winner of the 2003 Olivier Award for Best New Play, it wrenches home the destructive qualities of both love and art, and the sacrifices made by those who create it. The year is 1873. A young art dealer called Vincent Van Gogh arrives at 87 Hackford Road in Brixton, looking for a room and looking for love. As Vincent settles in to his new lodging he finds himself inexplicably drawn to his grieving landlady, Ursula, with whom he starts a turbulent, secret relationship that will change his life forever. Nicholas Wright takes the established facts - as a young man, Van Gogh did indeed lodge in Brixton - and goes beyond the door of number 87 to imagine what happened within. Note: Some early copies of our 2009 - 2010 season programme incorrectly listed this production as running until the 26th; Vincent in Brixton will run until Saturday 27th February.
